San Francisco based Nini & Pumpkin’s recently introduced their first product, the Moon Cocoon; and it appears to be a good one. Its main selling point is the unique, patent-pending design which offers greater versatility and a longer lifespan than its competitors.
This allows it to be used as the only sleep sack from infancy through age 3 and even beyond. From being a finalist in the 2014 NY NOW Best New Baby and Child Gear category to being mentioned in many online blogs, the new Moon Cocoon sleep sack (aka wearable duvet) is off to a great start. Here’s our full review.
Material and Warmth
One of the first things you’ll notice about the Moon Cocoon is that is has a very soft, high-quality feel to it. The 100% cotton shell and lining will only get softer after each wash.
With a TOG value of 1.9 (we consider that about medium), this wearable duvet is intended to be used year-round assuming the child’s room is kept between 65-72 degrees during sleep time. Like other sleeping sacks, it is intended to be used over regular sleepwear.
The Moon Cocoon is truly a one-size-fits-most product. The manufacturer officially rates it for 6 month to 3 year-olds but with the top portion off (we’ll get into that later), it can be used as a comfy play mat for infants as well as a snuggly blanket for once its main purpose is outgrown.
Most other sleep sacks will offer various sizes which may sound like a good thing at first but then you realize how quickly the costs add up when purchasing a new one every year.
Design and Features
Probably the best and most unique feature on the Moon Cocoon is the removable top. As all parents know, babies drool, spit up and have runny noses. Instead of having to throw the entire sleep sack in the wash, simply zip it off and replace with a spare or wash it without having to wash the rest of the sleep sack.
Not only does this save time and precious sleep, there’s little chance of the material on the main shell to start wearing down due to frequent washings.
Five different colors/patterns are available at the time of this review with the Elephant pattern being our favorite (but they all look great). If you opt for getting a spare top, you might even consider getting a different pattern that compliments the main shell.
The specially designed safety snaps have three different positions which can be adjusted for the best fit as your child grows. You will not feel any sharp edges like sometimes found on metal snaps. The zippers on the main shell and detachable top both function smoothly and the main zipper opens from bottom to top for easy nighttime diaper changes.
In addition, the top section zipper is covered by a small flap to eliminate the chance of your baby getting scratched.
What We Like
- Versatile and well thought-out design
- Removable top portion
- High quality materials
- Excellent “snuggability” rating
- Made in the USA
What We Don’t Like
- High initial cost (but you won’t have to buy a new larger sleep sack each year)
- We wish there was a lighter version for summer use
- Not naturally fire-resistant like Merino Wool
The Nini & Pumpkin Moon Cocoon is truly the first “smart” sleep sack on the market. It’s priced to compete with Woolino and Merino Kids but takes a different approach by being made of 100% cotton instead of Merino wool and offering the most versatility.
Like the others, its high price may be a turnoff, but your really need to consider that this will be the only sleep sack your child will need and in the end might turn out to be one of the least expensive overall options.
The Moon Cocoon is proudly made in the USA and would make for a fantastic baby shower gift or simply a gift for yourself. It’s not yet a well-known brand but has the potential to become a household name.
