Materials

Sleep sacks come in a variety of materials. Each have their own advantages and the material type should be one of the primary things to decide on when purchasing. While all the below materials are fine choices, they are listed in order of “good” to “best”.

Cotton

Cotton is by far the most widely used material for sleep wear and bedding. It’s very soft, breathable, hypoallergenic, inexpensive, and easy to care for. That said, cotton does wear out a bit quicker than other materials and it can shrink, especially if it’s 100% cotton.

Durability is its biggest downfall as it is susceptible to tears and pilling. Because it is synthetic, micro-fleece is fairly inexpensive.

Cotton Muslin

Muslin is a type of finely-woven cotton fabric. It originally came to Europe from the Middle East in the 17th century. The material’s open weave structure makes it lightweight and breathable while still providing warmth and comfort. It’s durable yet has a slight bit of stretchiness to it.

Merino Wool

Merino is considered by many to be the finest natural fiber in the world. Measuring about 1/10th the thickness of a human hair, it contains for spaces for air than synthetic fibers for better insulation. Merino Kids

Merino Kids was founded in 2003 by a mother who was researching the availability of sleepwear products for infants, babies, and toddlers. Based out of New Zealand, the company uses 100% natural products such as merino wool and organic cotton in its products. Sizes

Each manufacturer has their own sizing standards. Some, such as Halo, offer up to 6 different sizes ranging from Preemie all the way to 24 months. Others, such as Merino Kids, only have a couple sizes: 0-2 years and 2-4 years.

While more sizes generally means a better fit, you will also have to re-buy a sleep sack much sooner in a bigger size. For a lot of people, it simply makes more financial sense to purchase the higher quality and more initially expensive sleep sack since they know it can be used for two full years.

What is TOG?

When looking at various sleep sacks, you will often come across a value labeled TOG. TOG is the unit of measure for thermal insulation most commonly used in textile manufacturing. It is the international standard measurement for how well something keeps you warm.

Generally speaking, the higher the TOG value is, the warmer your baby will be. For example, if you live in a warm climate, a sleeping sack with a TOG value of 0.5 would be much more suitable than one with a value of 3.5.

What to Wear Inside a Sleep Sack

Since a sleep sack is meant to be used as a replacement for a traditional blanket, regular sleepwear should be worn inside it. While some babies naturally sleep warmer than others, the general guideline is that for warmer rooms (68-74 degrees) your baby should wear a short sleeve onsie underneath.

The “fleece” Gunapod uses a combination of 80% viscose (a semi-synthetic rayon type fabric) and 20% cotton. While it may look really warm, it actually has sort of a soft, thin, sweatshirt like material which is great for warmer months but may not be warm enough for winter use in many regions (unless they are dressed in full pajamas underneath).

Sizes

Gunamuna makes sleep sacks in 3 sizes (S, M, & L) but the one being reviewed is the small size for babies in the 3-9 month range (or 6-18 pounds). Looser fitting than others so your baby can even stand up in it in her crib and wear it while in a carseat.

Design and Features

A unique all-around zipper, which Gunamuna calls the “Wonderzip” system is what sets the Gunapod apart from all others. A set of zippers allow you to open the sleeping sack from underarm to underarm, just the legs, the front of the sack, completely open to lay flat, or somewhere in between.

It really is the most versatile design we’ve seen to date. Like some of the other good sleep sacks, this one includes button snaps on the shoulders.

The Gunapod comes in a variety of colors and prints but the most popular by far is the large polka dot design, which is really cute but the “chocolate” colored version is more of a black for those that are picky. If you have a girl, the “petunia pink” color is adorable. Overall, a good quality sleep sack.

With a 100% cotton exterior and lining, the Sleep Nest is actually classified as 75% cotton/25% polyester. While it may look sort of like a little sleeping bag, it’s actually much softer than you would expect. Instead of the more common wearable blanket-type sleep sack, the Sleep Nest feels more like an expensive wearable plush down comforter.

While fleece sleep sacks are popular to use in the winter, your baby will be much more prone to sweating in that material. The Baby Deedee Sleep Nest is both warm and breathable.

While many European sleep sacks are rated on the TOG scale (warmth measurement), the different versions of the Baby in a Bag Sleep Bags are based more upon material and individual preference than others.

For example, the models of the Grobag are based on the tog scale and designed accordingly. Here are all the different fabric options for the sleep sack:

Summer

1 TOG rating, perfect for room temperatures from 69 to 74 degrees. It is made of 2 layers and great for warm weather. Made from 100% cotton, the inner layer is soft jersey cotton and the outer is interlocking cotton, much like a sheet.

Size small begins at 3 months or 10 lbs. It is important to choose the correct size for the safety of your baby and it’s recommended that you follow the minimum weight/maximum lengths when selecting the right sleeping bag. Also, it’s important to allow a small amount of shrinkage with proper washing.

Small – 3 to 11 months, min weight 10 lbs, max length 30 inches

Medium – 10-24 months, min weight 22 lbs, max length 38 inches

Large – 22 months to 3 Toddler, min weight 28 lbs, max length 45 inches

Design and Features

The Baby in a Bag sleep sacks features a unique upside down zipper. The opening is on the front of the bag and zips open from bottom to top which completely eliminates the risk of baby getting scratched or the zipper getting caught on anything. Designed for easy dressing, removal, and diaper changes, the exact construction can vary slightly depending on which model you choose.

For example, depending on the size and style of the bag, some have snaps above the shoulders and under the arms, some do not. The bags are durable and easy to clean in a cold wash with line drying or low heat. Line drying is recommended for the winter polyester filled bags.

Of course you want to dress your baby appropriately underneath which means that a full body suit is recommended to be worn by babies in the colder temps while simply a diaper should be worn underneath on warm summer nights.

The outside of the sleep sack is made of soft cotton while the inside has a thin layer of super snugly merino. Unlike synthetic fleece sleep sacks, your little one will be much less likely to overheat and sweat.

Sizes

The original Merino Kids sleep sack comes in only two sizes: 0-2 years (baby) and 2-4 years (toddler). So while other brands offer more sizing options, they also need to be replaced about every 6 months.

The first thing you’ll notice is how long the sack is. This is great news for babies who are in the higher percentile in height which can be hard to find a proper fitting size in other brands. Alternatively, it’s also slightly narrower so if you have a somewhat chubby baby, it may not be as comfortable for them.

Design and Features

The baby version of this sleep sack is available in nine different colors. All are attractive but may not have the “cuteness” factor as some others. The oatmeal color is one of the most popular and fortunately is also priced the lowest at times.

The toddler sleep sack comes in six colors. Everything about Merino Kids products says high quality. The zipper is one of the smoothest out there and unzips from the bottom up to allow for easy middle of the night diaper changes.

A top cover on the zipper makes sure that it cannot scratch the baby. One of the sleep sack’s best features is the unique slit for a safety belt which allows easy transport of a sleeping baby from a car seat or stroller to their crib.

Why more brands don’t have this feature is puzzling. One feature that could have been better is the shoulder buttons which are only on one side. Most seem to prefer buttons on both sides to lessen the chance of waking a sleeping baby when putting on the sleep sack. Interestingly enough, the toddler size has buttons on both sides.

If you were to buy a cheap, lower quality sleep sack every six months such as the HALO, you may end up paying more in a two-year timeframe than the Merino Kids. It’s sort of like shopping at Costco… you’ll spend more in one trip purchasing a bulk package of diapers than a small package at the grocery store, but before that bulk pack runs out, you would have spent much more in total if you kept buying the small packages from the grocery store every time you ran out.

It would be an injustice to not review the top selling sleep sack in the US, but is it really the best? With dozens of different variations of its “wearable blanket”, HALO is the most well-known brand and is used by more than 1000 hospitals around the country.

It even has the distinction of being recognized as “Hip Healthy” by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. The HALO sack, particularly the cotton or fleece version, is a good inexpensive option to see if your baby responds well to wearing a sleep sack (most will!). If you’ve tried other brands of baby sleep bags, the first thing you’ll notice about HALO is that while the material is soft and comfortable, it is lighter duty than others. Nine different fabric options are available including the five most common below which are listed in order of popularity.

Cotton – Best for spring and summer months, especially in rooms with no air conditioning.

Micro-fleece – Ideal for cooler months. Softer than cotton but less breathable.

Organic Cotton – Surprisingly, this material is not as soft as the regular cotton. Great for little ones with skin allergies.

HALO states that all their fabrics are breathable and able to wick moisture but synthetic materials such as micro-fleece may cause excess sweating in some babies which tend to always sleep warm. While thinner than some competing brands, they are also very suitable for a wide range of temperatures through proper layering.

A diaper may be all that is needed to be worn underneath during warm summer nights while a full long sleeve bodysuit can provide the ideal warmth on those chilly winter nights.

While it may be tempting to buy a size larger for your baby to “grow into”, it’s highly recommended to purchase the size your young one will need right now. Also keep in mind that arm holes run a bit small while the neck hole runs a bit big.

Most parents will be two per child to be able to always have a clean one on hand. You really can’t go wrong with buying a cotton one for the warmer months and micro-fleece for the chilly ones. Even when they outgrow it, many kiddos will actually still carry it around with them and even take it to bed as a security blanket.

Overall, HALO makes good sleep sacks but they won’t compare to a Merino if you have a little extra to budget.
